Washington Post article honors the passing of renowned activist and FMS Alum, Leonel Gomez ’58

Leonel Gómez, 68, a Salvadoran human rights activist who investigated for a U.S. congressional commission some of the most notorious assassinations in his country’s long civil war, died of cardiac arrest Nov. 25 in the capital city of San Salvador.

Mr. Gómez was the lead investigator on the Moakley Commission, the 1989 task force headed by Rep. Joe Moakley (D-Mass.) that identified the Salvadoran army officers who killed six Jesuit priests and their housekeepers, helped put an end to U.S. aid to El Salvador’s army and pushed the Central American country toward peace.

Key Club Cadets Contribute to Holiday Cheer

Each year the Key Club takes pleasure in doing multiple service projects during the Christmas holidays to help those in our community that are less fortunate than ourselves. For the past 10 years the cadets have packed food boxes and participated in the Red Kettle Drive for the Salvation Army. This year for the first time, the Key Club served as “Santa’s Helpers” at Breakfast with Santa sponsored by the Waynesboro Public Library. On Monday, December 14, we celebrated our last Key Club meeting for 2009 by decorating a Christmas tree for a family in our community who could not otherwise afford a tree and holiday decorations – this project is sponsored by the Wayneboro Downtown Development, Inc.
