Images and Comments from the Memorial Service of Alex Bayer ’01

At the grave site, our boys, in front of the entire crowd and as part of the official ceremony, were to offer their condolences to the family, something they hadn’t expected and which definitely placed them out of their comfort zone. They were magnificent in their response. Mike Bayer, Alex’s father, commented that as the boys expressed those condolences to the family, (after an hour at the church, a mile march in coatees, white ducks and shako’s plus twenty minutes at the grave site, in DC heat and humidity) that their faces were bathed in sweat and it was dripping from underneath their shakos. They were perfect troopers and of great comfort to both him and Barbara as living reminders of Alex not so long ago.

Memorial for Chief Warrant Officer Alexander Moore Bayer

Alex was born on November 27, 1981 and baptized at St. Jane Frances De Chantal Roman Catholic Church. He grew up in Potomac, Maryland where his early passions in life were shaped by his summers in Nantucket and weekend winter ski trips to the mountains of West Virginia. He became an avid and accomplished fisherman and a powerful and versatile skier. He tackled every activity fearlessly and with complete abandonment. He loved life and he loved living it.

MSG Mike Anson Delivers Stroehmann Award Speech at CYB Dinner

We had our first track meet in five years earlier this month at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. A lot of young guys on the team—7th, 8th, 9th graders—a little bit tentative and apprehensive about participating in their first high school track meet. We have this one kid, a 7th grader, Lozie Goolsby (great name, isn’t it). He couldn’t sleep much the night before the meet, so at 6 a.m. he decided to round up some other runners on the team and run a couple of miles. When I found out I asked him, “What were you thinking?” He said, “Coach, we were just warming up a little bit to get ready for the meet.” I didn’t want to get too upset about that because I admired the initiative, but I let Lozie and the others know that running the morning of a meet is not the best idea they ever had

Doug Payne, FMS ’86 writes a fantastic piece about the Battle of Waynesboro

By way of introduction to this article, he writes, “As a lifelong student of history, I am fascinated by the stories of our ancestors’ lives that sometimes resulted in fortune or disaster, especially in times of crisis. Ultimately, their fates shape the lives of future generations in ways great and small. With this in mind, I recently discovered a story about a famous American cavalryman who altered the lives of a handful of my ancestors and their comrades who fought in Augusta County during one of the final battles of the War Between the States.”
