It was great to see everyone here for Graduation! I took lots of photos and have posted them all to our Facebook profile. I would like to encourage all parents who aren’t already to become a “Fan” of our Facebook page. Even if your son has now graduated from FMS, I hope you will stay involved as part of the greater Fishburne community. If you see an image you like (and you have a PC) you can “right-click” and select “Save Image As” and that JPEG should download. I’m certain you can do the same on a Mac I just don’t know exactly how.

Submit your article and class notes for the next Quadrangle!
It’s time to start work again on the next edition of The Quadrangle. Your articles and class notes make the publication great. Please try to keep article submissions to 450 words or less. We’ll do our best to get as many submissions into The Quadrangle as possible. With that in mind, there might not be room for all submissions. Fishburne reserves the right to make final edits and placement decisions.

Fishburne students honored by Waynesboro NAACP chapter
The Waynesboro Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) met at the Shiloh Baptist Church this past Sunday to honor local students. Keynote speaker, Alphonso Bowers, asked students to look beyond entertainers and athletes as role models and find family members, teachers and outstanding community leaders to emulate. The top two students of color graduating from five local high schools were honored during the event. Cadets Jonathan Vincent and Cletus Moffi represented Fishburne during the ceremony and received awards for their tremendous academic performance. Everyone at FMS is proud of Cadets Vincent and Moffi for their hard work.

Fishburne performs at the 83rd Shenandoah Apple Blossom Parade in Winchester, Virginia
Fishburne deployed over 50 cadets to Winchester, VA on Saturday, located in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley, to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival. It was a hot and humid day reaching a high temperature in the upper 80s. Cadets were outfitted in their parade dyke of coatees and tunics… not really designed for this extremely hot climate. The corps was resupplied with water in the staging area by Mr. and Mrs. Richer which really helped the cadets perform beautifully. The corps was relentless and persevered during the three hour event, never lowering their performance standards.

Spring Break Activities for Cadets While at Home
Just three weeks away (March 13-21), Spring Break is a time we encourage our parents to schedule an activity or multiple activities that might be more engaging for a young cadet rather than spending all their time playing X-box, Play Station, or the Nintendo Wii. Although the best opportunities require a little effort on the part of parents to organize something meaningful, the added benefits far exceed simply occupying his time and works to enhance his resume. We make note of this upcoming opportunity because volunteering (or working) during Spring Break can play a pivotal role in the development of each cadet.

Captain Dillon discusses Snowy Nights at Fishburne!
As a night shift TAC Officer that works every weekend with our cadets, there are different shades to every season at FMS. Yet, by the time the chill of late fall and the early winter arrives, the cadets have settled into the day to day routine where only a few are seen at night.

Cadet Sam Hollander reflects on his journey through high school
“Sam, you are not living up to your potential.” That phrase defines the first half of my academic life. I attended a small private school throughout my elementary and middle school years, enrolled in a large public high school, and then made the choice to come to a small military boarding school. I have seen it all, and in the end, I am proud to say that I found what works for me.

FMS Says Goodbye to J.D. Salinger
Cadets at Fishburne Military School acknowledged the value of author J. D. Salinger and his introduction of the main character, Holden Caulfield, through The Catcher in the Rye. Fishburne cadets read this novel about a student who is expelled from a private school in Pennsylvania and travels to the village in New York City. They identify with Holden’s intolerance for corrupt phonies in his life and the insincerity of adults.
The book touches a nerve in teenagers attracted to Caulfield’s support for nonconformist attitudes and the book has remained a best seller since 1951. Fishburne cadets readily identify with Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye and made these comments about the required reading.
