VIC Track and Field Championships

It was a blustery but otherwise nice day for the Virginia Independent Conference Track and Field Championship at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg.

Ninth-seeded Lozie Goolsby surprised the high jumpers by clearing 5 feet and claiming a fourth-place finish, which is impressive for somebody so young. He just began high jumping a couple of weeks ago. If there was an award for best young athlete, he would have won it, hands down.

MSG Mike Anson Delivers Stroehmann Award Speech at CYB Dinner

We had our first track meet in five years earlier this month at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. A lot of young guys on the team—7th, 8th, 9th graders—a little bit tentative and apprehensive about participating in their first high school track meet. We have this one kid, a 7th grader, Lozie Goolsby (great name, isn’t it). He couldn’t sleep much the night before the meet, so at 6 a.m. he decided to round up some other runners on the team and run a couple of miles. When I found out I asked him, “What were you thinking?” He said, “Coach, we were just warming up a little bit to get ready for the meet.” I didn’t want to get too upset about that because I admired the initiative, but I let Lozie and the others know that running the morning of a meet is not the best idea they ever had

Fishburne Track Competes at Stonewall Jackson Meet & VIC Championship Schedule

Glen Franklin won the long jump at 19’4”, which is over two feet off his best jump this year. He had to borrow Coach McManus’s shoes, which didn’t help!

Also, we’re making some tweaks and other adjustments to his technique, and that takes some time to get used to.

Lozie Goolsby was fourth in his first-ever high school-level high jump, clearing 4’, 10”. (First place was 5’4”)

Tennis Team loses a tough one against Blue Ridge

Although the tennis team has experienced a difficult go of things (0-5), the squad continues to stay competitive. Aided by the team mascot, “Stella” the Golden Retriever (Coach’s dog), the team took to the courts on Friday afternoon (4/9) for a match up against VIC opponent Blue Ridge. Although all the matches were close, Fishburne ended up on the losing end 2-7. Max Foetsch led the way for the Caissons with an excellent win at #1 singles. Max showcased his high caliber tennis skills and was a pleasure to watch. Although he took a tough loss, Charlie Male #3 singles, once again frustrated his opponent almost to the point of collapse with his highly consistent ground strokes.

Lacrosse wins against Stuart Hall 10-3

Fishburne secured victory over Stuart Hall with the offensive power of midfielders Estes (5 goals) and Burkhard (2 goals). Tinney led the defense and they neutralized the offense of Stuart Hall. Peters and Nastro split time
in goal and both played solid. Stuart Hall came to play and it wasn’t until 3 minutes left in the game that the win was certain. It was a very physical game, but the Caissons kept their composure to ensure Fishburne would be victorious.

Wrestling Season Ends with One Caisson in the Parade of Champions!!!

Excitement was the word of the day as all but two wrestlers had never taken part in a wrestling tournament of this nature; a State Championship Tournament. The tournament started out tough. Kyle Harvey lost his weigh-in to the scale and was out before it started. Kyle has been fighting a mid season growth spurt and has struggled the entire time in maintaining his weight below the allowed 121 pounds. The rest of the team made it safely and were ready to take their shot at the glory of winning at a state tournament.
